The Kidō Corps

The Kidō Corps is one of the remnants of the pre-Gotei 13 days. Founded and ran by the Makabe family, the Kidō Corps are usually conflated with the 5th Division of the Gotei 13, but they are entirely separate entities. The duties of the Kidō Corps are not direct combat. Instead, they construct, maintain, and (rarely) destroy the various barriers and seals set up across the Soul Society. This includes specialized seals such as those worn by prisoners to restrict Reiryoku. The Kidō Corps also operate the Soul Society's various Senkaimon—except those operated by the Gotei 13.

The Kidō Corps usually scouts members from the Shino Academy's high-scoring Kidō students (primarily those who specialize in Bakudō and barriers), but they do accept applications after graduation. If selected, applicants have an additional 2 years of schooling to complete before joining Kidō Corps.

The Kidō Corps has a less-rigid structure compared to the Gotei 13. The important ranks are that of the Grand Kidō Chief (who is in charge of the Kidō Corps) and the Vice Kidō Chief (who is second-in-command). When the Kidō Corps is deployed, the members are assigned into teams of 3-7 members with a team leader chosen by the Grand Chief or the Vice Chief.
